Note: This is a live site, and I'm just adding stuff as I go, so not all buttons will actually go somewhere yet. I will try to strike through or put “~~” either side when I can.

Condition Meaning

Condition is a term that describes someone's state of being. In medical terms, condition is used very broadly, and is generally a neutral term.A medical condition indicates a state of health, both well and unwell. Therefore we use it as a neutral term that can be used to describe neurodivergencies without the negative connotations that “disorder” has.A condition can be different from a neurotypical without being something wrong or that needs fixing. However, a condition can still be disabling. We use the word condition interchangeably with neurodivergencies. We will still use the term “disorder” to refer to some things that are considered to be illnesses affecting an individual's physical, mental and neurological health in a problematic way that may be considered 'wrong', for lack of a better term.Obviously whether something is a condition or a disorder is subjective, so for conditions we have I will use my personal preference, and for conditions we don’t have I will consult others who do have them.

Mental Illnesses

Mental Illnesses are disorders that affect mood, thinking and behaviour. They are diagnosed on the basis of distressing symptoms that impact the functioning of an individual for an extended duration. They tend to be harmful to the individual and may cause harm to others.Types of mental disorders are anxiety disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, post traumatic stress disorders, dissociative disorders, behaviour disorders and substance abuse disorders.

Neurodevelopmental Conditions

Neurodevelopmental Conditions are defined as conditions and disorders that affect the nervous system and brain development. They can be had from birth, or be developed later in childhood.Traits and symptoms also may not be prevalent from birth and may develop later in life. There are many causes, some of which are unknown, others include infections, genetics and physical trauma.Neurodevelopmental Conditions can be disabling and affect many areas of someone's life.Examples of Neurodevelopmental Conditions include ADHD, Autism, Tic Disorders, Communication Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, Motor Disorders, Neurogenetic Disorders, such as Down Syndrome, Learning Disorders, Behavioural Disorders, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Fetal Syndrome Spectrum Disorders and disorders caused by chemicals and drugs. Some mental illnesses may also be considered neurodevelopmental if they are acquired in childhood, because they may also affect brain development. Examples are Schizophrenia, Mood Disorders and Anxiety Disorders.
